In the spirit of this blogathon devoted to silent film, I'm going to attempt to make this a "silent" post, i.e., images only, intercutting stills from the film with pictures that will more or less represent my thoughts on it. To sum it up, I didn't think the film was that great until the final act. Hope this works...

  1. Very clever. I am more of a "Steamboat Bill Jr." fan than yourself. It is a very comfortable movie for me. Crazy about Ernest Torrence!

  2. I just didn't think it was very funny... but I suspect Keaton's brand of humor was not the same as, say, Chaplin's.

  3. I quite disagree with your opinion of the film's comedy value, but I love the way you deconstructed it. Refreshing and original!

  5. A popular opinion? Most assuredly, it is not. A fun and memorable post? YES. :-D

  7. Ha! I like the film more than you ... I probably wouldn't rate it with his best work, but I have a real soft spot for Steamboat Bill, Jr, as I think it was the first Keaton I ever saw.

Great use of the Liz Lemon eyeroll image, btw.

  8. The final 15-20 minutes or so are worth everything that comes before... not that everything that comes before is painful.

  9. A silent post. Brilliant. I think I liked the movie better than you did, but I like steamboats. Thanks for sharing with all of us.
