I still think it's worth it for the cinematography and music.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-58372029286387083582015-06-13T12:23:08.771-04:002015-06-13T12:23:08.771-04:00I remember being quite disappointed by the film as...I remember being quite disappointed by the film as I wanted it to be so much more.
I knew about the poster long before I watched the movie, and for that reason this film has strong links to a (personal) mythologised understanding and appreciation of surfer culture that's waaay more interesting than anything that happens on screen (there's a Vanity Fair article about it if you're interested: http://www.vanityfair.com/unchanged/2014/03/endless-summer-movie-poster)
Even so, an essential entry for the blogathon, and i really enjoyed reading all your thoughts. Waves are things to be observed at a distance; to be feared and admired. I recall seeing part of "Endless Summer" once and found it both fascinating and, after a while and despite the beauty, almost hypnotically boring. What? Another wave? Funny how even too much of the spectacular can become commonplace.Caftan Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05936895555808823221noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-60994894883793123872015-06-11T10:30:47.729-04:002015-06-11T10:30:47.729-04:00Yeah, aside from being a great surfing movie, SUMM...Yeah, aside from being a great surfing movie, SUMMER is also a great independent film success story. That was something I wanted to make clear as well.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-38755372718797595872015-06-11T09:47:18.301-04:002015-06-11T09:47:18.301-04:00I was really interested to learn how they got the ...I was really interested to learn how they got the distribution deal for this through those two showings. From the beach movie book I just read, I leanred those independent surfing documentaries were quite the raucous events going back into the 50s. Great post and thanks for joining us! I didn't focus a great deal on the globe-trotting aspect of the film, but now that I think about it, SUMMER does seem modern in that sense.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-58967695149742736452015-06-10T10:58:27.362-04:002015-06-10T10:58:27.362-04:00This film sounds like it has some utterly fascinat...This film sounds like it has some utterly fascinating footage. The theme of travelling around the world is very common for documentaries/Discovery Channel series now, but I wonder if it was considered groundbreaking at the time?

Anyway, great review! You raise some interesting points about their time in South Africa during an interesting part of its history, to put it mildly.

Thanks so much for joining the Beach Party Blogathon with this surfing documentary!Silver Screeningshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04955048716754142299noreply@blogger.com
