And I totally appreciate JLG's iconoclastic status - movies like this must have seemed absolutely revolutionary at the time they were released.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-60753864089774224772011-12-30T10:23:56.373-05:002011-12-30T10:23:56.373-05:00Ha! My problem was that I watched it at the end of a bender on Godard films. I had seen 7 or 8 others in a span of a few months. So all of his tricks and revolutionary techniques and so forth had become very old hat and cliché to me. I'd seen it all before. During Pierrot le Fou, I wanted to scream at my TV, "I GET IT! You don't follow the rules! Would you please just move the hell on from that?!?"<br /><br />I really want to give it another shot some time... but rest assured that my initial impression was very close to yours. Contempt is probably his most accessible work (and my personal favorite), followed by Breathless and maybe Vivre Sa Vie. Beyond that, he really tries hard to beat his viewers over the head with his breaking of the rules. And that's cool- I get it, I really do. But it's also why I've always preferred Truffaut. With Godard, it seems like the story and the film itself always falls secondary to his breaking of the rules. But Truffaut broke those same rules, again and again, without EVER taking away from the story, from the actors, etc... He was so much more nuanced and subtle.Johnhttp://tdylf.comnoreply@blogger.com
