My experience usually favors movie-before-book, though.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-55173878012689452362011-06-15T19:57:46.335-04:002011-06-15T19:57:46.335-04:00I believe that you're gonna favor whichever on...I believe that you're gonna favor whichever one you take in first - doesn't matter if it's the book or movie. That said, the effect is greater if you read the book first, at least for me. I can't think of too many instances where I read the book, then saw the film and wasn't significantly disappointed in the film. Going the other way's not nearly as bad, but, for example: I love Get Shorty. Have for years. Soundtrack, DVD, poster - I had the whole shebang. Finally decided to try to read it (my first Leonard book, too, shockingly). I dug the book - how could I not, they're nearly identical - but still can't help but think, "no way, the ending was way better in the movie," or "yea, the casting of DeVito was better than the description of that character in the book," etc.

Usually, I just won't read the book if I've already seen the movie since I hate having the actors in my head, but I ALWAYS see the movie after reading the book. Funny how that works out, too.Dylanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03337478312308606554noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-57638336498510750152011-06-05T00:22:33.990-04:002011-06-05T00:22:33.990-04:00When I was younger I sought out 'classics'...When I was younger I sought out 'classics' more often than I do now, and I admit, it was more out of a sense of obligation than anything else. And while some writers stuck with me - I found Tolstoy more accessible than I figured, for instance - most fell by the wayside. I think one needs to come to 'classics' in their own way, in their own time, to be more fully appreciated. More of life needs to be lived.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-85350507618858458592011-06-04T22:14:37.487-04:002011-06-04T22:14:37.487-04:00Some books probably just need to be read, before o...Some books probably just need to be read, before or after. "Pride and Prejudice," "War and Peace," "Wuthering Heights," like that.

Some probably never need to be read, like "Ben Hur."

One book I sought out on purpose before seeing the movie was "Watchmen." I read it and then I was ok just sitting back and checking out the movie.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-41155877402845526932011-06-01T20:54:36.289-04:002011-06-01T20:54:36.289-04:00I've had a yen for DH Lawrence ever since coll...I've had a yen for DH Lawrence ever since college, myself.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-81120196797914408102011-06-01T17:11:29.519-04:002011-06-01T17:11:29.519-04:00Great post, Rich. I have done this a few times as well, actually going back to reading the book after being impressed w/ the movie or just curious how things actually happen in the original story. Two of them on the top of my head are Persuasion and Jane Eyre, as you can see, I love my period dramas :Druthhttp://flixchatter.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-37231788198939001392011-05-31T21:32:51.581-04:002011-05-31T21:32:51.581-04:00The Dune book has got to be better than the movie....The Dune book has got to be better than the movie.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-25120804669935667132011-05-31T17:31:01.758-04:002011-05-31T17:31:01.758-04:00I've a few of these too - most recently I very...I've a few of these too - most recently I very much enjoyed Barney's Version after seeing the movie. Other books (from the top of my head) that I would probably never have read if I hadn't seen the film: Dune, Trainspotting and The Orchid Thief; all excellent in rather different ways.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18149329795866645050noreply@blogger.com
