There's not that much to his character, hence the charge of fluffiness.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-42635245709136058252016-06-17T16:57:11.822-04:002016-06-17T16:57:11.822-04:00Thank you so much for your extraordinary kindness,...Thank you so much for your extraordinary kindness, Rich. I really appreciate the plug, and I'm always interested to read about your take on a movie. As for the "ennui" that takes over you and the Caftan Woman -- one reason might be that I think we tend to expect the story to be about the lovers, but it's really about the beggar. He is a neat guy, getting away with so much, but the character really is sort of one-dimensional. He doesn't change, only his luck does. We know he'll come out on top.Jacqueline T. Maybe it was too fluffy? Though to be fair, I was also kinda drowsy when I watched it, so there's that too. But if Colman and Dietrich couldn't save this story either, then I dunno what to say.Richhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11376065182154885503noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4189120682398421108.post-23174536392189112502016-06-17T12:15:45.160-04:002016-06-17T12:15:45.160-04:00At the time this movie was released, "Kismet&...At the time this movie was released, "Kismet" had just finished a two year run on Broadway where it had won the Tony for Best Musical. I'm crazy about the music which is adapted from classical composer Aleksandr Borodin. However, the movie does not really hold my interest. I pick through it for the musical numbers. I thought it may have been this particular production, but I had the same ennui watching the non-musical 1944 film starring Ronald Colman and Marlene Dietrich. Like the later movie, it is well-cast and filmed in gorgeous Technicolor so I think the blame must lay with the book.Caftan Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05936895555808823221noreply@blogger.com
